Redot Engine
i thought we not talking about politics? this is very political, gonna be godot vs redot
I would consider it political adjacent but unfortunately necessary. Godot (or a rogue employee they have yet to reel in) made a political statement and as a result Redot is being forked in an attempt to move it away from politics again.
Similar to MikeCL I hope the political side of the discussion is able to be kept at bay. I want to watch the technicals of all this unfold and hope to learn from something from veteran devs.
the official godot forum on the subject announcement post i saw many posts "hidden"... even from people from this forum.. i personally despise global censorship... If you dont agree with the opinion, then hide it for yourself not the rest of us.
About the fork, idk how long will it survive, saw some comments on some issues where it felt like the same toxic people who ran the original is running the fork..
IDK.. the future is yet to be rewritten here.. Need few months for dust to settle and see what happens... Shame .. seems like there is no real alternative that is licensed under MIT, and with powerful 3d engine, compatible with other open source tools, big community..
The forum should create a room for relevant political discussion, (and not suppress opinions of any narrative, especially when relevant to the future of the base of the forum ( more so when representative of a vast majority of members (only poll would show if i am wrong)).... considering the Godot engine itself has decided it can and will BULLY people they do not like <irony> (because THAT is what happened).
Silence is violence..... right? Isn't that the whole mentality of the engines actions up to this point? I don't respect people being banned/blocked/silenced simply because someone overemotional was put in a position of power.
I'm not trying to open a "can of worms" (in here) but EVERY opinion should be voiced/discussed as long as it doesn't promote hate/violence/exclusion. An opinion should never create such.... disfunction... especially in an professional organization that has NO NEED TO PANDER to target audience etc.
I get that if the forum was openly attacking the actions of Godot (posting something on social media etc), we may be invaded by the "mob", just like the Godot cafe was, and NO ONE wants that... But the ability to poll the community on decisions/directions and take representative action would feel... well, correct. If we had sent a REAL poll to show Godot of active members saying "85%* disagree on current actions and request a completely non political stance be taken by the engine...." like what the people who got banned said (on social media).... it may actually have made/may make a difference.
Hopefully the engine survives and prospers, but that's only if the community does, being that its open source. So I am speaking as a member of an international community of open source software users, having been built and maintained by the idea of open source freedom, and created thru donations of peoples represented in all ethnicities, religions, sexes, and nationalities. Wanting to have that continue and prosper doesn't really seem political to me, kind of just relevant to the Forum/Engine.
This may seriously boost the forums numbers as well being a safe haven from the abusive powers of bias censorship.... cough cough...
@MikeCL I honestly do feel bad for anyone in your shoes currently, and i mean no disrespect towards you personally in any way. Making decisions to benefit the whole of a populations is pretty much impossible, and honestly, even with the suppression of recent events i feel you made a good choice not allowing the platform to spread hate or get caught up in something that was POLITICAL considering what a poop show this became. I am asking for a way to voice my/our opinions in the future... somewhere... because the way this all unfolded was very disempowering. Hopefully you can create a way to help people have open discussion, even when the topics ARE controversial/political

kuligs2 the official godot forum on the subject announcement post i saw many posts "hidden"... even from people from this forum..
About the events that took place, without going into detail, just for reference.
A lot of repressed messages were rehabilitated. I mean, shown back. Perhaps the very strong reaction of the users played a role.
We have to look at the development of events. Although I find Redot perspectives questionable.
I think the policy of this forum (it sounds strange when politics is without politics) is very balanced and probably the only right one in this situation. And a huge thanks to @MikeCL for being able to keep the forum alive under difficult circumstances.

I asked Gemini to write a short poem in the style of Shakespeare that compares Godot and Redot.
A Sonnet of Forked Paths
Two engines, born of one, yet paths diverge,
Godot, the elder, steadfast, tried and true,
Redot, the younger, eager to emerge,
A fork in road, where dreams and visions brew.Godot, a giant, standing tall and proud,
A stalwart oak, its roots run deep and wide,
Redot, a sapling, reaching for the cloud,
A hopeful shoot, where future may abide.Though kindred spirits, each has its own way,
Their paths may cross, or diverge once more,
Both seek to shine, in their unique display,
A testament to art, forevermore.
A different version, for those who prefer Russian:
О, Годо, ты надежда, ты мечта,
С тобою мы веками ожидаем.
Но Родот, брат твой, появился, что ж за дата?
Иль просто мира мы не понимаем?
Tomcat i am not sure if this is the case or not... there seems to be a lot of speculation about this "fork" and what it is exactly... but it sounds like Redot was already in the making and that it was geared more towards VR/XR side of Godot since Godot was not working with certain "people" ( i assume software creators, but idk).
So while it is a "fork" i think its being engaged as an "alternative" due to the current climate. Seemingly pushed too soon with the people pointing out the Godot logo and name is still seen in the program (help section i believe someone said).
I don't know how factual any of this is, but seemed to be some decently educated folks on Godot's activity trying to explain this (maybe reddit page).
I tried to join the discord to ask about what it is and what is actually different from people using it, but the discord is not accepting people now, most likely due to the mob of "activists".... errr... programmers(?) i mean...
REVBENT I hear you. And well written. I do understand the sentiment and I do get the feeling you want well. Even if there’s a few people being very vocal about the situation on twitter, YouTube, etc, and the Godot foundation doing what they do (good or bad), we have to realise, this is not most people.
Most people just want to use their tools, do cool stuff, and hangout with other passionate people. To grow, create a product or whatever it might be, without having to be sucked in to other people’s agenda (referring to the drama that is taking place). And not let a tool or a company dictate their own public ideologic association. This doesn’t mean they are against (or for) whatever ideology that’s being pushed. It just means that people have their own things in life to worry about (specially in this current harsh economic climate), and they come to a place like this to mostly do a very specific thing that (hopefully) gives them a bit of joy, solve a problem or share a passion.
I think protecting that is very important.
With that said, I will have to think about what you are proposing. (and I want to let you know, I'm not dismissing what you are saying.). I appreciate your comments and I do think you make some valid points.
REVBENT considering the Godot engine itself has decided it can and will BULLY people they do not like <irony> (because THAT is what happened).
and
REVBENT EVERY opinion should be voiced/discussed as long as it doesn't promote hate/violence/exclusion
I have never and will never block, ban or censor someone for having a different opinion. As long as those can be made respectfully without personal attacks (and of course follow the rules), having opinions are fine. ( I sincerely hope people feel this way here ) .
REVBENT but it sounds like Redot was already in the making
I have not heard such an assumption. From what I understand, it now seems to be just a clone of the latest version of Godot. So far even with all the props. There's already been a bit of a scandal there, of course.
since Godot was not working with certain "people"
Before this story, I hadn't heard anyone complaining that Godot didn't want to work with them. There were exceptions, like the troll who ran on this forum, but there the reason was solely due to the person's business characteristics and his character, but in no way due to his orientation (political or sexual).
but the discord is not accepting people now
Yeah, Discord Godot is not working. This problem is being solved now.
If anyone is interested in the details, you can take a look here.
or ask an active participant in these events (me).

REVBENT but the discord is not accepting people now
Discord Godot came to life.
Without saying anything political... jesus, I was worried for a moment that the Godot team has done something horrendous from everything I saw here, and then I find out it just started from some tweets. I hope Mr Musk finally kills that site soon.
This fork is dumb and there's no good reason to switch to it. There, I said it.
There is no going back, the deed has been done. Now for people saying its just a tool, but if there are no repair shop thats gonna help you repair the tool when it broke, then its pretty useless.. If the devs start leaving main project, and not even going to the fork, then we have lost the "tool". Sure its open source, you can "fix it" yourself, but then you will need to spend 10 years catching up on all the things that godot did, + all the time in the world for you to get comfortable programming..
Very sad that this hit the fan. There is no real alternative to godot that is under MIT license unfortunately..
MikeCL I'm curious how they will start to differentiate the engine over time. If they will bring a different philosophical approach to technical design etc.
My initial gut reaction is thinking that they will mostly let other people do all the work and merge 97% of the changes made to the "official" Godot and someone will use this to scam some people out of money. Time will tell I guess. But it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth and if anything this would make me want to donate money to the Godot foundation even more.
More power to them, I guess, it is open source, after all. (and their Github still has the Godot branding).
I am not sure about what drama happened - I tend to stay off social media - but I'm not jumping ship to a fork made 3 days ago until I know someone - more than one person preferably - is working on it and improving it actively. Just forking it and slapping a new name on it is not convincing me.
I listened to the launch stream. They seem like nice people with good intensions. But it's probably going to take a while for them to get up to speed and evolve. So at first I think it's going to be mostly what Godot is. I think the biggest difference at start will be if they have a different strategy for merging PR's that have a hard time getting approved by the core team at Godot.
Let's see if Redot can implement Intel Arc GPU GI support faster than Godot
I think it has the disadvantage of splitting resources. Maybe I'm wrong about that as I've just been a user. As long as I'm not required to post a political message on a game I make, I don't really care. The way it sounded to me is it's just the forum moderator who basically knows little to nothing about the engine, anyway. We have this forum which I don't think is connected.
IMO the name Redot is synonymous with retard, and its kinda bad
Also google searches gives many other commercial stuff named RED DOT or something like that.. whic will confuse people even more.
Stuff from interview TLDR:
1) They are still working on release
2) Keep compatibility with OG godot
3) Idea is that to have redot as modules, menaing godot engine core will stays the same but redot stuff gonna be like modules, like in linux.
4) People want to replace gdscript, redot does not, not at the moment.
5) They gonna make yt channels that will feature projects, also they want weekly podcasts, where they talk about dev process and whats going with the engine.
6) They gonna post changelogs on twitter and youtube (i dont have twitter account, and kinda think this is bad)
7) Next week gonna be a mascot contest for the redot on discord (such a shame its on discord)
8) First build gonna be now-tomorrow ???
9) Improving documentation with more examples how to use functions
10) Website gonan be simple with download link and link to discord ( )
11) Gonna be a games jam when the first build is out

kuligs2 i have to agree using major, privately owned platforms as the primary method to communicate things as vital as changelogs, is strange, especially when the point of the fork is to avoid affiliation. that is, unless i'm understanding the point of the fork wrong. is the situation truly confusing, or is this post-viral head fog messing me up?
besides that, when you say "synonymous", do you mean "sounds like", or "similar meaning/connotation"? if the former, i see that, and besides that i still don't like that name. terrible cadence, a pain to say aloud, and as you already stated, throws up well established unrelated search results from most search engines.
it's like i say a lot offline, rule 1 to a memorable name, search it online before you decide. failing to do that is how your band never gets recognized and falls to time despite collaborating with Queen's Brian May.
packrat the latter i mean.. language is subjective, what is offensive in one langvich is not in other .. you have to keep that in mind..
I agree that you have to think before you name something... its easy to get in sweaty legal battle if you name something that already exist, and oh-oh..

I find myself oddly indifferent towards the whole thing, including the original drama. Forking triggered by skirmishes between rainbow unicorns and attack helicopters is not the brightest of ideas imho.

xyz skirmishes between rainbow unicorns and attack helicopters
Is this really necessary? I'd like to be able to visit a game dev forum without being reminded that the average person sees gay and trans people as at best a nuisance and at worst a plague on society, dealing with this shit in real life is already tiring enough. I guess it's my fault for clicking on this thread, but it's on my front page every time I check and there's no way to block or mute posts.
The blame for that belongs to the political left.
DaveTheCoder The blame for what?
The source of your complaint.
housatic I could be wrong but I think @xyz is referring to what Juan said about the situation. And what triggered the situation.
DaveTheCoder The blame for that belongs to the political left.
Let's not got there. No need to point fingers.
housatic raised the subject, not me.
Maybe, all I know is at this point I just have the "rainbow attack helicopter" etc. jokes associated with people harassing me and my friends, so I get defensive when I see it
SO just saying a RTS with rainbow unicorns vs attack helicopters would be pretty original.... an Apache and "sprinkles" facing off may get interesting... i will be taking bets.
XYZ is just voicing the extremist nature displayed on both sides in a coy manner (i did "lol" personally). id think we all have the ability to see when something/someone is being too abrasive with their actions, and both parties have gone a little too far here overall.
The whole point of having different parties is to decide HOW to achieve the SAME goal for the betterment of the people. somewhere along the line the world got stuck in a realm of extremes and people are missing the whole... work together aspect.... for the betterment of everyone.
With that said i support the journey of the fork, as long as its headed in a meaningful direction... i really hope it doesn't continue to polarize the environment anymore than has been done here recently. I will still use Godot. Its was my last stop after trying the other engines and i have grown to appreciate the community more than anything.
@MikeCL i will support whatever decision that is made on the forum... this is a great environment and you managed to keep this site "safe" from the BS.... kudos, really! I am "salty" about the outcome still, but it has little effect on me personally (so it does make me feel stupid being this way)... I just foresee this event being being the first step in a bad direction of partisan tactics. It is always best to treat a cancer before it spreads.
if you say REDOT in the OFFICIAL discord it gives you a time-out and you cant post anything.... i literally tried asking about what people knew and if they tried it... guess Godot has an official stance on the fork now..... or they are letting the same person control their message... either way... pretty much the same tactics at work.
xyz skirmishes between rainbow unicorns and attack helicopters
This is a great idea for a game!
I find myself oddly indifferent towards the whole thing, including the original drama.
Well, you can use any engine you want or even create your own. For me this topic is more painful because if the engine dies I will be sad.
housatic jokes associated with people harassing me and my friends, so I get defensive when I see it
I'm in a similar situation and that's why I'm reacting so strongly.
REVBENT SO just saying a RTS with rainbow unicorns vs attack helicopters would be pretty original....
It can be RTS or TBS or shooter or card game — anything.
The whole point of having different parties is to decide HOW to achieve the SAME goal for the betterment of the people.
The contradiction is that each party has its own understanding of which people need to better their lives.
Unambiguous.
