axolotl Time will tell.

Polt I want to watch the technicals of all this unfold

I'm curious how they will start to differentiate the engine over time. If they will bring a different philosophical approach to technical design etc.

There is no going back, the deed has been done. Now for people saying its just a tool, but if there are no repair shop thats gonna help you repair the tool when it broke, then its pretty useless.. If the devs start leaving main project, and not even going to the fork, then we have lost the "tool". Sure its open source, you can "fix it" yourself, but then you will need to spend 10 years catching up on all the things that godot did, + all the time in the world for you to get comfortable programming..

Very sad that this hit the fan. There is no real alternative to godot that is under MIT license unfortunately..

MikeCL I'm curious how they will start to differentiate the engine over time. If they will bring a different philosophical approach to technical design etc.

My initial gut reaction is thinking that they will mostly let other people do all the work and merge 97% of the changes made to the "official" Godot and someone will use this to scam some people out of money. Time will tell I guess. But it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth and if anything this would make me want to donate money to the Godot foundation even more.

More power to them, I guess, it is open source, after all. (and their Github still has the Godot branding).

I am not sure about what drama happened - I tend to stay off social media - but I'm not jumping ship to a fork made 3 days ago until I know someone - more than one person preferably - is working on it and improving it actively. Just forking it and slapping a new name on it is not convincing me.

I listened to the launch stream. They seem like nice people with good intensions. But it's probably going to take a while for them to get up to speed and evolve. So at first I think it's going to be mostly what Godot is. I think the biggest difference at start will be if they have a different strategy for merging PR's that have a hard time getting approved by the core team at Godot.

Let's see if Redot can implement Intel Arc GPU GI support faster than Godot 💫 😅

I think it has the disadvantage of splitting resources. Maybe I'm wrong about that as I've just been a user. As long as I'm not required to post a political message on a game I make, I don't really care. The way it sounded to me is it's just the forum moderator who basically knows little to nothing about the engine, anyway. We have this forum which I don't think is connected.

IMO the name Redot is synonymous with retard, and its kinda bad

Also google searches gives many other commercial stuff named RED DOT or something like that.. whic will confuse people even more.

    Stuff from interview TLDR:
    1) They are still working on release
    2) Keep compatibility with OG godot
    3) Idea is that to have redot as modules, menaing godot engine core will stays the same but redot stuff gonna be like modules, like in linux.
    4) People want to replace gdscript, redot does not, not at the moment.
    5) They gonna make yt channels that will feature projects, also they want weekly podcasts, where they talk about dev process and whats going with the engine.
    6) They gonna post changelogs on twitter and youtube (i dont have twitter account, and kinda think this is bad)
    7) Next week gonna be a mascot contest for the redot on discord (such a shame its on discord)
    8) First build gonna be now-tomorrow ???
    9) Improving documentation with more examples how to use functions
    10) Website gonan be simple with download link and link to discord ( 🙁 )
    11) Gonna be a games jam when the first build is out

kuligs2 i have to agree using major, privately owned platforms as the primary method to communicate things as vital as changelogs, is strange, especially when the point of the fork is to avoid affiliation. that is, unless i'm understanding the point of the fork wrong. is the situation truly confusing, or is this post-viral head fog messing me up?

besides that, when you say "synonymous", do you mean "sounds like", or "similar meaning/connotation"? if the former, i see that, and besides that i still don't like that name. terrible cadence, a pain to say aloud, and as you already stated, throws up well established unrelated search results from most search engines.
it's like i say a lot offline, rule 1 to a memorable name, search it online before you decide. failing to do that is how your band never gets recognized and falls to time despite collaborating with Queen's Brian May.

packrat the latter i mean.. language is subjective, what is offensive in one langvich is not in other .. you have to keep that in mind..

I agree that you have to think before you name something... its easy to get in sweaty legal battle if you name something that already exist, and oh-oh..

kuligs2 Unfortunately his recording cuts off early.

Here's the entire recording on X..
I suspect you need to be logged in though. Not sure it's up on youtube yet. I couldn't find it.

kuligs2 Hehe, yeah... They might have jumped the gun on that one.   😬 Redot Games is what sticks out to me.

I find myself oddly indifferent towards the whole thing, including the original drama. Forking triggered by skirmishes between rainbow unicorns and attack helicopters is not the brightest of ideas imho.

xyz they tried to for gimp once, it didnt go well because as we all know gimp stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, someone didnt like it. D:

in few years we will see who is the real godot 😃

xyz skirmishes between rainbow unicorns and attack helicopters

Is this really necessary? I'd like to be able to visit a game dev forum without being reminded that the average person sees gay and trans people as at best a nuisance and at worst a plague on society, dealing with this shit in real life is already tiring enough. I guess it's my fault for clicking on this thread, but it's on my front page every time I check and there's no way to block or mute posts.

housatic I could be wrong but I think @xyz is referring to what Juan said about the situation. And what triggered the situation.

DaveTheCoder The blame for that belongs to the political left.

Let's not got there. No need to point fingers.
