To be precise it only does work when I restart the entire engine. Then magically all the .import files appear. Any clue how to fix it?

Importing images doesn't work
Can you describe the steps you currently do to import an image?
Toxe I just drop an image into a game folder, as I did in godot 3

I don't run a file manager, but every time I copy a png into any file in my project (with the terminal), godot generates an import immediately. It sounds like you're expecting godot to pick up the new file while godot isn't running, which doesn't make sense to me. I'm using the same version as you, for linux.
