Hi, I am one of the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) org admins of the Catrobat FLOSS project. We offer one Godot-related GSoC project that is sponsored by Google. The project is about first steps to replace our current 2D game engines (libGDX for Android and a self-developed one for iOS) with Godot. Catrobat is a smartphone based IDE and engine for games with a visual block based script interface similar to MIT's Scratch, but supporting smartphone sensors, a box2d physics engine, and multiple scenes, among many other features such as bluetooth based multiplayer or control of external hardware via Arduino or Raspberry Pi. Our IDE flavors have over 5 million downloads.
Note that Catrobat is not a competitor of Godot, since we focus for both the IDE and the game development purely on smartphones (there is no support whatsoever for larger screens) , and our user base is very young, typically from age 7 to 16. Catrobat can be a stepping stone for young users who want to transition to the full Godot IDE once they have learned more about game development and coding. We also think about exporting our users' projects to a Godot format, which then could be edited in the Godot IDE itself by users who have a PC.
We are currently on the lookout for individuals who are willing to dedicate 175 or 350 hours over the summer towards contributing to this Godot project. This is the good opportunity for young people to enhance their skills. As a prerequisite, we require a strong willingness to develop in a test-driven way using clean code methods. If you know any budding techies who would be interested in this incredible opportunity, please don't hesitate to share this post with them.
The application deadline is tomorrow 4 April 2023 at 18:00 UTC (sorry for the short notice!). Check out these links for more information:
