This is my match-three game. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It's not finished, and probably never will be. I love this type of game, so I'll likely keep tinkering with it forever.

At the moment, it's playable, but there are no goals or ending. Every match produces an obstacle that you have to deal with to keep playing. I plan for each color to produce a different obstacle or effect. It's fairly generic at the moment, so someone might be interested in the source.

You can try it here.

Edit: The source has been moved here.

Not bad. I'm not a big match 3 fan. I didn't get the square things on there that didn't let you match 3. I wear out on them pretty fast. The trouble for me is they aren't really a puzzle, but they are popular. For me, there would have to be a way that you can eliminate them all somehow and that would start a new level.

There's only one type of trap at the moment, and you just have to make a match adjacent to it, but of course you get another one immediately. You have to figure out how to make each match eliminate more traps than it creates.

My favorite match-three (and my favorite game, truthfully), is huniepop (the original). Don't laugh. I'm an anime fan.

I really loved Bejeweled. I think the games that came after were cheap clones.

I think bejeweled was one of first, but not the actual first. It borders on being a game genre now. There are so many variations on the theme. I've played rpg's where the battles were match3 games. I enjoyed them better than the battles with people in some instances, but I wear out on that kind of thing pretty fast no matter what they do.
Anyway, all you need is a slight variation and people are fine with it. Instead of jewels, monkeys. Whatever. That way people basically know the rules and can just jump in, but it's a little different. Add different incentives. Might be story, might be anything.

Right, Bejeweled was not the first, but they were the first to get a really good formula in terms of the action and power-ups. There were lots of older games that tried it.
