The main reasons for starting this topic:

The inability to legally use Windows due to sanctions - a purely political reason
Rejection of M$'s policy on surveillance and personal data collection

Actually, the point of this topic was to get away from politics... but...

Should telemetry in Ubuntu have been mentioned? — Absolutely, since it is directly and immediately relevant to the topic. Should age verification have been mentioned? — Of course, for the same reason.

Politics is all around us. It's all the laws and what comes from them. Even the rule of “not talking about politics” is political and pretty much impossible to follow.

Weapons were mentioned in passing. By that time, there was already enough politics here without weapons.

And, in general, the topic could have died down if it had been ignored, but it was necessary to raise it with the suggestion “not to talk about politics” — very clever. Just like professional politicians do.

Actually, Ubuntu is maintained by Canonical Ltd., which is a big enough company to have a legal team and adequate resources to implement the age nonsense if they wanted to.

But if you're concerned with these matters, you're putting the cart before the horse. You should actually install a Linux distribution and learn how to use it first.

axolotl Both Godot and Blender work perfectly on Linux. For raster graphics you can use Gimp or a variant. Audacity for audio.

I personally prefer Tenacity.

kuligs2 I use Devuan of all the Linux distributions so it doesn't use systemd. systemd is too weight, eat a lot of resources, and has a lot of vulnerabilities.

I recently learned how to use systemd for running a periodic task, when I encountered a problem prompting interactively for a password using crontab in Wayland. While doing that I discovered the anti-systemd movement, but I have insufficient knowledge to have an opinion.

Many people complains that it has a lot of vulnerabilities, others that it has something with Google DNS, others (such as me) that it eat a lot of the PC resources, but others that it has too much "stretched" the codebase (unjustified), about 1.4 million lines of the code for a system initialization.

One of the people, I saw, even said "it isn't a trojan?" 😅

Ubuntu and other Linux distributions that have systemd are widely used by people who place a high value on security and privacy, and if there were a serious security or privacy issue it would be publicized, which it is not.

DaveTheCoder I've just watch the source code by a quick look 🤔. It tries to control mounting/unmounting devices, and even swap partition! I've wrote only about those things those I reminded just now only 🤔. If see on this, isn't a too much for a simple initialization system? 🤔 Because Linux has its own tools those do these things, but in this case the initialization system tries to control every corner of your operating system almostly! I personally thinks that it's too much for a simple tool that should just only runs the apps at a start of your system 🤔

A periodic task is a task that runs once every 30 minutes, once an hour, once a day, etc., like a Godot Timer.

I have a periodic task that backs up a directory. It encrypts the backup, and needs to prompt me for the encryption password because I don't want to have the password sitting in a file. (The task is actually more complicated, but the details aren't relevant here.) There may be a better way of doing this, but I haven't come up with one yet.

Because I want the task to do the backup. All I have to do is type in a password. The task compares the timestamps of the latest backup and the source directory to see if a new backup is needed. It only prompts for a password if a new backup is needed.

This is a special backup of sensitive data such as login credentials for online accounts, so it needs to be encrypted.

xolatgames *run the apps, and control the running processes. But I still think that it's too much that it tries to track them 🤔. It's too weight, especially if compare this with other initialization systems.

You may be right, but systemd (and Ubuntu) work well enough for me. I don't care what they're doing "under the hood".
