Is it all right to use AI music?

I know this is similar to the post by @Erich_L, but I wanted to do it anyway. We all know that AI trains off things on the internet. But do we know if it uses the music on subscription-requiring websites? If it does do this, AI music would not be right to use. Vote in this poll what option you think is true.

PS, I used AI to generate this image. If anyone thinks that this is similar to a picture that was made entirely by a person, then let me know so that I can take it down.

Too bad, almost all of the AI music sites say that they are free to use, then charge you for downloads. I actually got a song that I really liked.

ArDanZ11 charge to download and then tell you that youre on your own, and if some SNOY type corpo says you are infringing on their copyright then you are dead in the water.

kuligs2 I have decided to try to figure out how to bend AI to make music for free. It would be cool to make a totally free website for AI Music Generation, that only uses Royalty free music.

Pretty much all art genAI models are trained on data they got without permission. Even if they only used free music, that doesn't mean the artist consented to it being trained on. Most of it was created before commercial genAI even existed, so it's not like they could have known to add it to the license. And that's assuming that the company went out of its way to only use royalty-free music, which I highly doubt. Many of these companies are already being sued by record labels. These services can't exist without humans producing the data first, but they won't ask for permission or pay them for using it 🙃

On a more positive note, there's are plenty of artists making free-to-use music who would be happy to see it in a game. Just on top of my head I can think of https://jjbbllkk.itch.io/ and https://godotforums.org/d/22845-sharing-my-music-and-sound-fx-over-2000-tracks.

Pretty much every story about a hero was trained on the original hero story and they did that without permission... kinda mute point if you ask me.. i have said it before, if its publicly available, then its not their fault that they read it, and happen to think of similar thing... Sure stealary is one thing but if you google picture of a brown skidmarks, its not my fault someone put a pic of their dirty laundry on a public site. I will use it for whatever i want it to use it and you as the author will never know how i use it. And im sure you dont want to.

That's a good point.

If a book is copyrighted, you can't distribute copies of it without permission. But copyright laws don't prevent anyone from reading the book and learning to use the author's writing style.

When a AI engine uses the book in its training, so that anyone can effortlessly use the author's writing style, is that a copyright violation?

kuligs2 Will all due respect, if that's what you believe then I don't see a point in arguing with you. Just don't get mad if one day you decide to share something you created online, and someone else takes it and reposts without credit.

kuligs2 Forgot to add: Something being on a public site doesn't mean copyright laws don't apply. By that logic I could take the Google logo and use it as mine... the difference is the average person/artist doesn't have the money to sue you. Anyway I'm gonna leave now, I find the constant discussions about AI really tiring to be honest 🙁

Now you could make a logo of dog poo in style of google and call it poogle, would that be copyright infringing? Just becasue one gets inspired by your work dont mean its a copyright issue.. im not copying im getting inspiration.. now people dont like that the computer get these inspirations thats another thing..

There should be discussions about this, how far reaching is the issue.. if the model is released for everyone to use, even the same artists that got "robbed" how is this theft? anyways, i just like memes made by AI, and they are getting better, as for some serious work, its not there yet. Poople who cant distinguish AI slop maybe need to get a license to be human, go to school to learn what is real and what not..

The computer does not "get inspirations". You're falsely ascribing human-like psychological processes to machine's output. It's a form of apophenia. Nothing even remotely similar to "getting inspiration" is happening when a neural net generates an image. This only shows that you do not understand how it really works.

In simplified terms, the computer merely does a weighted averaging of an enormous amount of pixel data. And that data was used for that particular purpose without permission from its owners, i.e. it was stolen.

Instead of resorting to magical thinking, better learn the basics of how diffusion or GAN algorithms/models work. May broaden your perspective.
