  • Writing and Selling a Book on Godot

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding the commercialization of content related to Godot. Given that Godot is open-source and free to use, am I permitted to write and sell a book about it?

To provide some context, my intention is not to generate significant revenue but rather to receive compensation for the time and effort I will put into writing and researching the book. Additionally, I aim to help increase the popularity of Godot in my country.

While I am passionate about promoting Godot, I am not in a financial position to dedicate months of work without any compensation. Your insights and advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

is this going to be AI generated book? And whats wrong with godot original documentation? Its pretty feature full and explains alot with some tutorials.

I think anything that is licensed under MIT or other "copyleft" license could be used freely and commerically, without any restrictions/charges from the original authors.
So imo you are fine to use the official site's docs commercially, as long as they are explicitly licensed under MIT.

kuligs2 its practical side is weak, also it does not support my countries language (most people here (Azerbaijan) doesn't speak English). It is not going to be AI generated book.

dorpen most people here (Azerbaijan) doesn't speak English

IMO, the best thing to do in this situation is to translate the documentation into your own language. By posting a link to donate. The book will be obsolete while in print. Godot is evolving and changing very quickly.

Tomcat or better yet, contribute to the project by as suggested by op translating the docs and doing PR

I totally agree! I experienced this also with tutorials for unreal, unity etc. After every version change it is possible something does not work anymore. This can be months or a couple of years after the release of the book/tutorial.

Maybe an online book that gets updated would be nice, but then you could also contribute to the documentation so everyone can benefit from it, unless your goal is to make some money.

If you can do something by godot that other softwares can't do, or if you can do the same thing by godot with less investment, it will naturally spread, and I think this effect will be better.

Thank you for your responds. After searching I found a translating page in the Documentation which allows me translate it to my language. I already started translating to Azerbaijani.

          Thank you for great efforts.
