"They" knew it since the 3rd century BC and had a pretty good idea of its circumference since Eratosthenes' experiments.

Projections aren't needed to determine a position, angles to references and an as exact time as possible is enough, if you don't take into account for all of earth's orbital parameters, just the daily rotation.

Projections come when we want to draw a map(*), or for our applications, when we want to convert for instance the more intuitive spherical coordinates to Euclidian ones (x/y/z) for use in the computers. When I say I am at 28° North, 18° West that's much easier understand (provided you know where the 0-Meridian lies, or where you are in relation) than saying my UTM-position in WGS 84 is Zone 28R E: 216133.93 N: 3179691.71 (copied and pasted :-)). Or even what the renderer wants, a 3D-vector (5.33114e+06/-1.71164e+06/3.04494e+06).

:-)

(*) Fun fact: medieval and early modern times maps were east up so, that problem "what's up" is pretty old :-)

Pixophir Yes but degrees don't give you a distance between points A and B unless you are intimately familiar with the planets radius I guess.

I'm going to make an add-on for Godot that makes x-axis up. Just to mess with people. Or every time you open the editor, the 3 axes are randomly swapped.

Nerdzmasterz I got it off Synty Studios.

Who specifically create assets for Unity &/or Unreal, so will have used the appropriate alignment for each (presumably as separate files for each, given they both use different defaults as shown in my pic above).

Nerdzmasterz It works fine with Unity and Unreal, but Godot does that to it.

Godot didn't break anything, it imported the asset exactly as it was intended. It's just this asset wasn't 'intended' to be used on Godot, so you will need to rotate it manually yourself, or contact their sales and ask them to also target Godot (it really should be trivial for them to do this for you, especially considering how exxy some of their products are o.O).

Unless something has changed, the same would be true if you had an asset specifically made for Unity then imported it into Unreal or vice versa. It would flip it on it's head.

        Megalomaniak

It is a more natural measurement developed for navigation in past times. Geographically, degrees (angles), distances and times are directly convertible into each other: 1 degree is 60 nautical miles on a great circle which is the shortest path between two points on a sphere, 1 minute of arc is 1 nm, 15° is 1 hour of sun's path, or time shift. So that makes estimations pretty easy. More so since base 12 has so many divisors.

But I stray off topic, nevermind :-) My intention was to point out that there are many ways to get a fix and that it isn't that important how the axes of a Cartesian coord. system are oriented, as long as one can take care of it during ex- or import or when building one's own meshes.

Nerdzmasterz I am unimpressed with Itch. Is there no other place to publish a first game?

What's not impressive? Itch is the easiest to publish, since it's free and basically like YouTube. You can try Steam, but it's a much more involved process and costs money. Most of the other stores are curated.

Nerdzmasterz Spam MediaFire links across every forum you can think of. Or you can check out Newgrounds. That place is surprisingly still active with games.

cybereality TBH, the vibes I get there tell me they are unprofessional.

The tut series is a long process of videos that take me hours a day, and I am still proud of what I'm doing. The Godot series combined with a new Unity series gives me over 50 videos about programming. Itch will not be able to stop me from that sensation of pride, but they basically ditched my showcase for my zombie game which I was going to publish there after I was done with the Godot beginner tut section- in hopes of at least getting donations. I need to showcase it somewhere, in a store where it can be advertised before its release. That game was made with everything I've been showing them/will show them in that beginner section, so that I might get more viewers.

Plus, they gave me no explanation for ditching the showcase, either.

cybereality I never got to play the first Little Big Adventure but, I did get to play the sequal Twinsen Odyssey.

My mouse is broken again( for no apparent reason) I and now I can't do gamedev 'til I get a new one. This keeps happening. Oh well.

If you are doing video tutorials for sale you can check out Udemy. I thought you were selling a game.

cybereality My deal is, I have no audience. I'm looking to offer a free game in hopes of building one.

And I am thinking of doing something on Udemy, but so far everything I'm up to is on YouTube.

cybereality I did too at first, but it turns out I enjoy making these videos. I get viewers from all over, and I've coded for so long, it just feels natural.

What's not to like about Patreon?

Nerdzmasterz - if you use Patreon, make sure to check your Patreon settings so those who back your page/project have to pay to access the files if you are offering anything that is paid-only. I had a Patreon years ago and didn't have my settings right, and so people could "pay" so they would be charged in the upcoming month but get access to the files right then, and then cancel their subscription before they were charged, effectively getting it all for free.

It might be better now though, but something to be aware of so you don't have that issue. I think there is a setting for it now so you can prevent that from happening from what I remember from a newsletter I got prior to shutting down my Patreon.

                Testing Sketchfab plugin:

                It works 🎉

To use it, go to the Sketchfab model you want to share, press the embed button, in the popup that appears go to appearance and select the Use BBCode checkbox and copy the first line of the embed:

Then you can paste it to embed it. For example, the above embed looks like:

There are several payment modes. Yep, they squeeze out money because on the cheap rate, the choices are limited.

Tomcat I just had an idea. I could sell this whole thing as a tutorial series as a paid course, and offer the game with them as a bonus. That way, if they hate the game, they didn't really pay for it.

I'll probably put it on Itch as well (grumble, grumble), but take it down after I get a bigger audience and can afford my own website.

Nerdzmasterz I just had an idea. I could sell this whole thing as a tutorial series as a paid course, and offer the game with them as a bonus.

I can't tell if courses are successful selling on Patreon. I've seen successful game developers there. My attempt to make money from tutorials on Patreon failed before it even started. For political reasons — the ability to withdraw money to our banks is blocked.

But I can say that the support there is quite responsive and quite supportive. I did not immediately understand their rates and took the easiest one, which, as it turned out, did not suit me at all. (However, from his description it was not clear enough.) I was transferred to the normal rate, with more convenient payments. You can change the tariff yourself, but you can't cancel the prepayment. But they did it for me. In general, it is quite possible to talk to the support.

Megalomaniak To use this "Miracle", first you have to install Git and register on Hugging Face.

Tomcat I was thinking Udemy. I don't really know Pateon that well, but I don't really have anything special for supporters on it.

Updated an old Godot 3.X voxel project to Godot 4.0-beta and tested SDFGI on it.

                      !<

There is some light bleed around the voxel corners I could probably fix with some tweaking and adjusting, but all in all, the results are better than I expected.

It doesn't work during real-time voxel manipulation though - I have to toggle the SDFGI on and off via a key-bind as otherwise it doesn't get the latest voxel mesh changes. So not super usable for something like Minecraft-esc gameplay, but for a level editor or similar, it could be a pretty viable boost to graphics.

packrat What do you all do in your free time.

I just play with Godot all day. But I am trying to play more games, I kind of go in stints where I will read like 2 books a day for a month, then watch 2 movies a day for a month, now I am in game mode. I finished Shadow Warrior on the Steam Deck, now I am playing again on my PC at max settings. Also playing Wolfenstien 2.

                          cybereality
I'm playing Red Faction Guerrilla Remastered.
Damn fun driving around Mars and smashing buildings to pieces with a sledgehammer. 🙂

After seeing the recent videos of the Scorn prologue, I started getting an urge to play a bio-mechanical horror world game. Prey 2006 would be great, but that game can't be bought online anymore (rights issues and stuff), it was pulled from steam and GOG doesn't have it.
Just for a joke, I typed "prey" into Search Everything (Windows hard drive search tool). Wait, what? I've got prey 2006 sitting in a backup copy of an old hard drive... and it runs. Ok, that's next on my list. (Last played maybe 2006 when it came out).

(The recent Prey was forced by the publisher to be renamed to Prey against the developer's wishes to cash in on the old game's IP)

Portals, changing gravity, bio-mechanical body horror, living weapons, lots of fun. 🙂

I played the Prey demo back then, but never had the full game. The new one is actually really good, I would say almost as good as Bioshock. They should have just made a new name, but it didn't make a difference, the game was still great.

Yep, I really like the new Prey, but I still wish Prey 2 (sequel to Prey 2006) wasn't cancelled.

But Bethesda's scummy business practices ruined Prey 2. They were the publisher, but screwed over the developer to force a hostile takeover. Human Head (the developers) wouldn't give in, and in the end the game was abandoned and the IP was given by Bethesda to Arkane (who made Prey 2017 from scratch).

I didn't mind Bioshock, but I found it a bit of a let down since I was a huge System Shock 1&2 and was hoping for something closer to those.

I mean, honestly it sounds like Human Head misjudged their position. I do understand, I've dealt with cancelled games and politics at my old jobs. It sucks, but it's also just business. And if they really wanted to finish the game, they could have a made a deal. It's really no one's fault but them if they wanted to strike as some political statement. That was their choice. Also, Arkane is just a much better studio. All their games have been rock solid, and from what I'm seeing in the video Prey 2017 was probably better than what Prey 2 would have been. But it is a crappy situation, I agree.

I fully support the idea of smaller developers standing up to hostile takeovers by huge corporations, even if it means they lose the right to finish a game.

Here's the founder of Arkane talking about how much he disliked what happened. (He resigned after Prey 2017 because of this)

I wanted to apologize to them many, many times, I didn’t really have a chance because I don’t really know those people. It was never our intention to ‘steal their IP’ and make it ours. It’s gross and that’s not what I wanted to do.

I'm still waiting for Arkane to do a sequel to Arx Fatalis, their best game. Maybe in VR, the "draw in the air" rune magic system would be great for that!
I would have worked on a VR mod for Arx Fatalis, it's open source now, but it's GPL, so not going to happen.

Yeah, I guess I support that too, but it's still their choice. Crappy situation altogether, but it seems like allowing the takeover would have been better for everyone.

I must build me a new place, which is difficult atm. And some game programming :-) Well, I'm trying.

Happens rarely. I stay in bed and only do the most necessary tasks until it is over. The usual flu stays between 1 and 4 days with me.

It's been 10 years since that last happened. We entered a bar in downtown Santa Cruz de Tenerife after sailing the leg from the Azores (Sao Miguel no it was acually Flores) to Santa Cruz in under 4 days.

Pixophir I went to a concert and made friends with the bouncer at a club next door when my buddy locked his keys in his car. What happened inside was a blur but there was a witch, a cowboy, and a cat. Cowboy makes really good whiskey sours, and the cat was really cute. It looked a lot like this one, if I remember right.
