computer keeps freezing up.

My computer keeps randomly locking up. I looked at log files but could not find anything. The only thing I could find is the xserver connection with kde is lost, and kde shutsdown.

Is KDE unstable like this? Should I try and different operating system other than kubuntu. Or do I need a computer. I am willing to try using openSuse.

I assume you mean to ask if you need a new computer. To which I can only say if you identify the source of the issue to be a hardware part that can't easily be replaced on it's own.

Something I'd also recommend looking at is the activity-monitor/task-manager and see if you can identify what could be hogging up a bunch of resources. That said, as @Megalomaniak mentioned, you probably should be seeking help on the forums for the OS, as they will have more experience and can better narrow down what is going on or what should be done.

I've run the diagnostic in the bios. Not hardware faults are found. It must be software. And it will do this without running any programs. This is a problem because it could destroy my MMO project with godot. I've already had one roll back because of it.

Well, you could try ruling out KDE as the problem source by installing another DE. Try LXDE for an example. IIRC it should be a fairly lightweight one that doesn't require much performance or resources.

I've installed linux mint cinnamon. And then it crashes. Just like before. Getting a replacement is too high priced. I'm going to try and install my other OS and see if problem happens again. 18.04 LTS kubuntu. I read that ppl had problems with later kernels.

I now have rolled back into 18.04 LTS kubuntu. No crash yet. I've also moved a usb device into a differnet usb port. It had crashed very often when writing the usb disk. I'll have to wait at least 2 whole days and see.

Make sure to backup your project to an external memory source and/or an external source control database (like GitHub, Bitbucket, etc) if you have not already so you do not lose anything if something goes wrong!

Agreed, point in fact, I have a network drive/nas. Could even try installing git on it so it would act as a git server for me.

I'll make sure I have a backup. I've been using a pen drive. But I have lost my backup along with the main before. So far it's been running without problems. Seems better on performance too.

ram chips are currupted. I think all of them are bad. It's expensive to invest in them without knowing for certain.

Tried https://www.memtest.org/ ? You should also try removing all but 1 memory stick and then running test on each individually , one at a time. This way you can rule out which is fine and which is bad. I highly doubt that they are all bad all at once.

Memtest86 locks the computer up at a certain percentage point. Different percentage point with other ram chips.

I purchased a set of ram. Even if it doesn't fix the problem, I'll use them for my replacement machine. For now I think I'll just play my violin.

I've decided to try another option. Turning off SERR in the bios. before these problems started, my bios had reset itself to factory defaults. The SERR might have been turned on in that event. Something I noticed, is kubuntu booted much faster.

In that case your memory timings might have been off too, might be the memory is fine but was running under unstable conditions.

Too soon to know. For this bios the memory is auto configured. But, I have been using ram chips that have much higher rating than supported. The bios under clocks them. It's time to get the right chips anyways. Still too soon to know, at least 2 days running time.

It crashed! Now I have found out that one of my sodimm sensors has failed. It's not getting a reading from it. But it should, it usually works. I think it's the motherboard. But they cost too much. Too much trouble. I have to wait until next month to get a replacement machine.

See if you can find the option to turn XMP on, that is the "optimal" memory configs stored on the memory itself. It usually includes a couple of them, one is the "OC" profile the other should be a lower spec safer config to use.

edit: yes, MoBo sounds more likely than all of the memory modules having issues.
