For everyone downloading PDF files, as with other file types, you do this at your own risk. If I find out there's malicious use of the format, I will close it down.

Tomcat I think I want to avoid that, as it might become a security risk just by browsing a page. At least with a downloadable file, the user can make their own decision about trusting the source. If the forum had an automated way of scanning the file before rendering it, that would help. But this forum currently has no such feature.

MikeCL can you not take a screenshot of the pdf first page and display it as an image? there has to be some backend package that can do that.

I don't care about that. The first page of the .pdf might not be informative anyway. When I post an attachment, pdf or otherwise, I include text in the post that explains the attachment.

Usually, the first page captures the essence of the document, like a title page. Sometimes a .pdf file consists of just one page. There must be a way to safely extract its image without using the embedded scripts.

It’s worth noting that I wasn’t the one who suggested attaching .pdf files to posts. And viewing the first page is just a logical next step.

I'm just pleased that Pdf files can now be attached. I don't need to see what's in there, any more than I need a 'zip' file contents displayed, or hear the first bars of an audio file. Maybe I'm too simple; I send and receive Pdf files all the time; they are nothing strange nor new for me. I don't consider them to be any more of a risk than any other file type that I open. The chances of them doing harm are so low as to be negligeable, as far as I'm concerned. Just sayin' 'Thanks, Mike'.
