Blender Losing Money – CEO Ton Roosendaal Stepping Down

The board accepts to book a loss in 2024, which is less than the profits booked over 2023. The board expresses a concern that, because of the ongoing growth, the financial reserves that have been created in the past years, are below 7 an acceptable level.

Blender has always been a great example of how free software can be commercially viable. Now we have to admit that this is not the case. Freely distributed programs cannot generate profit and pay for themselves. It's still too early to say “Blender - RIP,” but the trend is clear and obvious. (This also applies fully to Godot and free games.)

Linux aint dead after 30 years and by golly, if it dies, the whole world will return to monke... literally.

Blender will just stop at some version, if it will ever stop, there will be forks etc etc.. maybe after a while another flavor of blender just like loiux distro etce tc.. someone will make it work.

Now sure you wont get ever expanding new features... but really do you need all of them?

Imo they did a smart move when 2.8 came around and revised the UI so that it was usable by many more people, unlike pre 2.8 where it was ass backwards to learn to how to control the viewport..

Now they just need to port it to android, so that people can use it on the go by artists. Thing like grease pencil, when used correctly is very awsome tool. On pc you have to have specialized hardware to start using it naturally with pen etc.. but most modern tablets nowadays come with decent pen, so imo its the next big step.

I just bought a beefy tablet - Galaxy S10 tab FE (do not reccomend, because it requires you to gave google and samsung one account, in order to turn it on), and on this atleast v5 didnt work.. it did but there were visual glitches all over and icons and panels invisible.. not usable at all.. other people from post have more success. IDK if its because the tablet is too new or the hardware not compatible with the one that it was compiled to..

Godot run on android, so why cant blender.. sure you wont be able to render stuff but meshing and sculpting, should work i think.. i just want sculpting app that is free.

I thought someone would bring up this misunderstanding. I won't ask the obvious question about the number of users, but I will ask something else. Do you know about paid versions of Linux and how they differ from the regular ones? If you dig deep enough into this topic, you'll only find more proof that corporations have won.

Imo, in the recent years, Blender got too expansive and greedy for features the big players have in their products. They may be paying a price for that. The related major problem is that Blender in not designing those features with efficient production workflows in mind like big guys do.

not sure what you mean? if android is more surveilled than windows, then idk, but its a handheld - in sense - tablets, where most artits live. Usually laptops for hard works and tablets "ipads" for light work. Ipad might be more polished than any android for sure but then you are locked into their ecosoystem. ANd if it breaks then well "we can fix it for the price of 2 new ones or buy a new one"... while on other hardware you can pretty much find some forum post on how to jailbreak the thing and put on custom firmware to bootload some more freeer type of OS with more user features than the factory ones, and maybe get more years out of it.. or fix it yourself 🙂

Anything is surveiled, even cats outdoors are surveilling you every day, there is no escape from that.. at some point you have to make a decision - live under the rock or just bite the bullet and do what you want knowing that you are being watched, just be careful with that.. make smart decision before you click.

As for windows, its jus practicing too much bloat, and it becomes more and more like the advertising board at your local supermarket.. too many layers of garbage stack upon...

And yes i have, but i dont have reason to pay for something knowing that there is no real support.. nobody wants to deal with your problems.. you can pay someone to fix it.. but i dont feel like paying nobody atm.. Ive tried suse and it was garbage... maybe on older hardware it worked out of the box as it should but not on current gen hardware.. and you still had to tinker around to get it to work... To use browser, you dont need a computer.. your fridge probably more stable web browser.

Even on windows, paid windows, for companies.. when windows broke our printer driver for months because of "update" and we had to reverse the update for few weeks but then it auto updated regardless.. and support was as indian as you can get... the illussion of paid software is funny to me. I have seen far too many cases of corporations pulling dirty harry on customers.. its my personal opinion..

It is interesting that in Russia, we explain in much the same way that there is no need to hide from surveillance. My response is that I am not going to make it easier for myself to be surveilled — it is entirely possible to create real difficulties in this regard. And you don't have to hide under a rock to do so.

In Windows, updates can be disabled, either completely or selectively. It can be customized much more than Android.

I consider linux to be a corporate product. There's enormous amount of corporate investment behind linux development, kernel included.

Tomcat What this has to do with corporate backing of linux development. Don't tell me you think linux is being developed by some enthusiast bedroom coders. It's mostly people paid to do it. And guess who is paying them.

I don't understand the doom & gloom. Blender can easily get their act together and be more mindful with their spendings. Same with Godot. Crying that the sky is falling only plays into the pockets of Big Industry.

I've heard that if you exclude babies from the list of users, the list becomes ridiculously short. I've also heard that it's completely unsuitable for serious work. It's perfectly possible to make sketches, but you can do that on lots of other devices.

They should have instead put paid interns into big studios to take notes about how they use their Mayas and Houdinis.
