i've come up with a way to save some graphics processing, and time, but it requires all the white in the image below to become red, essentially setting the BLUE and GREEN channel to 0, leaving RED untouched.

  • i didn't find an online tutorial, but i was pointed to imagemagick and found docs for the level-colors modifier.
    in my case, the command was magick texture.png +level-colors black,red texture_red.png

    A general way with Krita (free, open source) is to add a Multiply layer on top, then color the Multiply layer red. GIMP would can do the same but I think Krita is superior for art.
