tile data always returns as "<Object#null>"

Hi, when I get data from a tile in the tile map using get_cell_tile_data() it always returns with <object#null>. there is definitely a tile in the position I specified, but for some reason it does not give me the tile data. I have been stuck on this problem for 3 hours, please help.

In case anybody else gets here:

The tile must be set with set_cell(...) before you can query for the tile_set for data.
