What's the forum's official position on uploading on-topic animated gifs of larger size (e.g. 5-10 mb)? I'd like to use them a bit more in my wip thread, but don't want to cause any unacceptable storage/bandwidth burdens on the server.

Using videos over GIFs is recommended, as they compress more efficiently especially at higher framerates. However, the forum doesn't support embedding video files, so you need to upload them to YouTube as unlisted or upload them as an attachment (neither of which support embedding).

I think you can upload larger GIF files using the “Add Images” button, which would upload and host the GIF on Imgur.

The reason there is a limit to uploads is to save bandwidth on the forums server. I’m not sure what the file upload limit is set to currently though, so it might need to be increased for larger files.

Uploading to YouTube as an unlisted video may be the easiest way to have longer content that can be easily embedded. YouTube also allows for he video to, optionally, have audio as well. I think Vimeo embedding also is supported.

On a whole though, as long as there isn’t tons of large files being uploaded all at once I think it’s fine to use whatever works best for you, whether it’s uploading or embedding :)

Perhaps we could somehow support odysee embedding too? Might be a nice alternative to youtube...

It should be doable, especially with the iframe embedding. I’ll take a look at adding support later today.

Odysee embedding support is now added! Now you just need to paste the link and it will automatically make an embedded video player:

Example: https://odysee.com/@gamefromscratch:1/lua-in-godot:8

https://odysee.com/@gamefromscratch:1/lua-in-godot:8

It might take a little bit for the change to show up though, as the cache in CloudFare has to update its cache.

The Odysee embeds seem pretty nice, a little lighter than YouTube (also no fullscreen, so better for smaller test videos that you would use gifs for). I never heard of the site, but I created an account and synced my YouTube, it has all my videos now. Pretty good new user experience.

You can right click on the video and it should provide the browser default option for full screen. edit: I mean after you have started the video playback.

Odysee embed is not working for me in chromium browsers. It just shows an empty white box with a gray outline. Brave displays only links when shields are up.

EDIT: Seems it started to work.

We added Cloudflare caching to the server recently, changes may not be instant (and some people may see them before others, depending on your location or what CDN you are hitting). Usually it doesn't take more than a day for the changes to be visible to everyone, but as an admin you can manually flush the cache after big changes to make sure everyone sees them.

Yeah. I flushed them mid-day yesterday so it shouldn't be too long before it's fully updated in all the servers.
