  • Cheddar Con Carne:A Prelude to Whimsicality

Hello everybody, allow me to properly introduce my dream project I've been wanting to make.

(Origins) It was around 2015 when I first drew this image: This was the first picture I drew of the curious dormouse who goes by the name of Colby Cheddar. Over the years as I was drawing Colby a lot, I came up with Rubia Rabbit and Willikers Weasel as the supporting characters. After trying to figure out what to do with my characters, I've decided to create a uniquely weird game. So around October 2019, I've started development on what should be my most ambitious project yet.

(Plot) The plot follows Colby Cheddar who just baked herself a delicious cheesecake with a zesty taste known as Cheddar Con Carne that grabs the attention of the starve raving mad Willikers Weasel. As Colby chases Willikers to get her dessert back, she ends up in a dream-like world that is unlike anything she's ever seen before. Not only does Colby needs to get her cheesecake back, but she also has to figure out how to escape from the surreal wonderworld so that she can return to Normality.

(How the Game Works) The game is basically a 2.5D (2D hand-drawn sprites over 3D backgrounds) comedy adventure that is less on puzzle solving and more on exploration and humor. The game takes a lot of inspiration from Earthbound, Alice in Wonderland, Space Funeral, The Neverhood and so much more.

(Scrumptious Sounds) There will be an original soundtrack composed by myself. Using the power of LMMS and a whole lot of soundfonts and VSTs, I intend to have a unique soundtrack with variety and a quirky sense of humor. Here are some tracks I've done so far:

(In Conclusion...) Just so you know, this is going to be my first ever game, So I'm gonna need a lot of help. But with that out of the way, I hope to have a lot of fun bringing the wonderful adventures of Colby Cheddar to life.

Well, audio being one third of the game as an experience, I'd say you already have a pretty significant start! Not to mention a coherent idea for a game. Good luck. :)

That looks very cute. Nice music too. Good luck!

Just got done working on the one of the first setpieces for the game in Blender which is the first room of the Capriccio Corridor:

Just wanted to show off some of the illustrations I've done so far for the storybook intro.

Been making some progress on the art of the game. Been wanting to know about the dialogue: Should I use storybook-like narration or witty, humorous dialogue or both? What do you guys think?

Looks like a humorous type of game, but not really sure what you're going for.

To be more clear, should the dialogue be like: a storybook-like narration: Just like in that Castle of Illusion remake, the story will be told as if someone was reading a storybook to you. or like a wacky Saturday morning cartoon with some bits of dark, surreal humor thrown into the mix.

You can do both, no? Sort of like the narrator in the Shrek movies.

@jbrooks79 Actually it's kinda more like a mix between Alice in Wonderland, Wayne's World and Di Gi Charat, but other than that, that seems like a good comparison.

This looks awesome! I love this artstyle. Keep at it buddy! We're rooting for you. ;)

Just completed the intro cutscene for the game:

Just wanna let you know that the next few weeks are gonna be really busy, mostly with getting ready to move to a new house, so I might have to give the production a bit of a hiatus. As soon as things settle down, I hope to get back to my dream project.

those animations looks amazing! specially the 1st one with the freaky look

keep up the work!

There are some things I've been thinking about with my game. Would you like the game to have a side-scrolling view or a top-down view like in Earthbound?

I don't know if it's part of your style, but you change tenses. For instance, if you say, once upon a time, you normally maintain the past tense. So you say, she lived, not she lives, because once upon a time is something that has already happened. If you are doing that on purpose, then it's basically all right. I saw another place in the intro that you also did it with the hole thing. I wouldn't recommend it, myself. The art and story look good.
