Its tough. I too have a version of asteroids out there somewhere first made in gm and then moved over to godot. I tried to get into time manipulation with mine, like slowmotion as a mechanic but it didnt really change gameplay which I think is at least one thing than could make something more noticeable; getting a mechanic in there somewhere that is not common and feels fresh. The other thing is to go hard on graphics and/or sound for example using lighting and shadows, showing more power and effect with particles and deep detailed sound.
