Accessing project settings from code

Is it possible to access project settings from code? I noticed that it's possible to add new categories and properties into project settings but I can't find any information on how to access them or if this isn't possible, what to do with custom properties.

Yes, it's. Use Globals for that:

Globals.get("CategoryName/PropertyName")

FYI for Godot 3 it's been moved to ProjectSettings

ProjectSettings.get_setting("Category/SubCategory/Property")

Be aware that you can't write/set from code to the project settings on some operating systems (i.e. Android). This is at least true for the 2.1 branch.
