Starting off

Hi, I just downloaded the engine and want to start making a simple game. I have no idea what I'm doing, and I've had good experiences with forums in the past.

I'm wanting to make a top-down-view 2D game, and I'm trying to figure out how to create the "ground" that everything else rests on. Am I starting from the wrong place?

At the moment, I just want a background for everything else to lay on, and then to create a character to walk around on that surface. Just that, nothing more. Any help would be awesome. It's not gonna be pretty, but just that little bit would help a lot.

Hey there, I don't think you're starting in the wrong place. I don't know if there's a rule of where to start a game, in my opinion if you start with the part that'll be most essential in the structure of the whole game things will be fine; and in your case this may be the ground and the controls of your main character. As it is your first time using the engine it's good to start with a simpler goal like the one you're trying to achieve. Then you add complexity to it =) I did a quick search and found this tutorial, see if it helps to get started: (but use .tscn extension for scenes, in the tutorial he's using .xml and as far as I remember this format will be discontinued)
