  • If you could remake any game, which would you choose?

I'm sure we've all looked back at a game we played in the past and wished there was an updated version available with updated graphics, better controls, etc. Just curious which game or games the Godot community would pick to remake if they were given free reign? 2D, 3D, doesn't matter, I'm just curious to know what people would pick and why.

For me, I'd definitely pick Blood Omen, Legacy of Kain.

I've been replaying it recently, and whilst the music, voice acting and atmosphere is still spot-on, the low-res sprites, clunky movement and combat mechanics haven't aged well at all. Add to that the inventory and item select screens are a nightmare to use.

So, if you had the option of updating or recreating any game, which would you pick?

Good choice, I loved BO:LoK.

I'll have to go with Ultima Underworld I think. Mostly because I just love the Stygian Abyss.

Arx Fatalis would be my close second.

I have to admit I haven't played either, but I like the look of Arx Fatalis. I might grab it form Steam as it's pretty cheap. Ironically a remake now would probably be classed as a Skyrim rip-off, such are the times we live in :)

What would you do differently? Are you saying you'd keep the story and mechanics but just change the art style?

Should you get the game and run into issues with running it know that the source-code was released by the studio into opensource and there's a project batching it for newer windows installs and updating the game named Arx Libertatis. The project has also worked on cross-platform support should you want to run it on another OS. Also I believe both games are available from GOG DRM-free. Both are €5.59 and Ultima underworld is bundled with underworld 2.

I've always been partial to wanting to see the original X-Wing redone with the campaign ribbons and everything! I think it would be cool!

Oddly enough, I've often thought some of the old MUD type games I used play would be interesting to see updated as modern games but still keeping their RP elements and so forth. Like Gemstone III/IV I think would be really cool to see as a graphical world so that a new generation could experience it. (Note: I never played the game seriously but I have fond memories of my limited time with it nevertheless).

I'd love to remake the original Maniac Mansion by LucasArts with updated graphics and sound. Wouldn't it be cool? Even if I could, I wouldn't do it though, requires too much damn work and money.

Edit: Zak MacKracken would be cool too.

Always wanted to do a remake of Windjammers: Flying Power Disc. Was one of my first arcade games.

Have you guys played games that you don't want to remake? Personally I want to remake every single game I've played, since I haven't played a game yet that didn't have noticeable flaws.

i would try to remake games that i wanted to know how they were developed - games like daytona usa, virtua racing, raystorm, raydream, rez, xevious 3d-g, dariusburst, i-robot, gti club, densha de go, radikal bikers, etc. - remaking Kenta Cho's games would be great as well...

I don't think I'm remotely qualified to do this, but I'd really love to see a JRPG version of Planescape:Torment. Not that I think it would be better, but it would certainly be interesting. Can you imagine the field day the artists would have with Annah, Fallen-From-Grace, and the Lady of Pain? Wouldn't it be funny to see the Nameless One with beautiful, flowing hair? Wouldn't it be great to have all your choices stripped from you... well, not that, but I'd still play it.

Interesting idea, while at it and in the same vein, why not FF7 but in the bioware/western RPG style?

The best games for re-making are titles that had clear potential, but fell short in some clear way. There's already gold there, but a little bit of excavation and polishing could take what was good and make it shine.

I think Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is a fine example. It is a game that does a lot of things right, but was also severely limited in many respects. A little extra polish to the combat system, interface, and graphics could take what was good and elevate it to being great. Some later titles in the series would also benefit from re-makes, though usually for different reasons. Blood Omen 2 would probably be the best candidate.

For me personally, I would re-make Hunter Hunted. This was a mid-90s PC game developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra. Dynamix was a fantastically experimental developer back in the day, and a lot of their games had some great elements. Hunter Hunted is one of those. It had a great combat system, and a pretty sweet multi-tiered 2D arena system. It also had some fantastic local multiplayer. A similar gameplay system in this day and age would work really well, whether local or on-line multiplayer focused. It would also benefit from controller support. The game suffered from having mediocre graphics and a fairly bad/generic story premise. With a new art style, a little expansion on the gameplay options, and maybe a few extra players, this type of game could be phenomenal on modern platforms.
