Good day, my dear chaps!

It's been a while since I posted here, since I wasn't actively working on a project.
However, now I am working a bit on my next project: a fishing game.

This won't be just a fishing game. No. This game has a minor twist!
Instead of fishing for fish, you fish for objects and other random stuff!

I have already made a bunch of 16x16 pixel art and a little code.
Like the ducky down below!

This project is pretty small, compared to my last project.
So I don't think I'll be working too long on it.

I just need a reason for the player to play the game, besides the fishing part.
Maybe a subplot where the protagonist is in debt and has to sell the fish?
I don't know yet.

I kind of don't feel like writing a hundred blog posts, like last time.
Besides it doesn't give a good sense of what I am actually doing.
So I have started to experiment with live streaming.
If you are interested, be sure to join in some time.

I spent some time figuring out how I want the visual to look like.
Pixel art with some comic book aesthetics is what appeals to me the most.

While you cannot see it in this image, the water moves and some particles to represent leaves falling.

I did code a bit to draw single pixel thick lines and curves, which I will use to make the rod and line.
Mainly because if I were to draw the frames individually, It wouldn't have as smooth of a motion.
The rod shown in the picture is an older version, which I need to replace with the new system.

Right now I am more working on the visuals and UI.
Hardest part for me right now is to make the basic gameplay look feel fun.
I figured having exaggerated animations will add the needed spice, which is what I'll be focussing on.

After not really having done much gamedev for like a year, It's nice to just sit back and do some messing in godot. 😃

SuperDoomKing Font does not go well with the pixel art.. its readable, but it feels out of place. Needs to be pixel art type font IMO

Not relevant to the game at all, but I felt like sharing this pixel art sketch I made. ✏️

I was thinking about increasing the resolution of the game, so the pixelated text will be readable.
Right now, if I were to display the text pixel accurate, it would be literally unreadable.
This sketch is closer to the resolution I may go for.
I made it to see what resolutions the game could be to make sure the text has enough pixels to work with.

I like drawing.

SuperDoomKing Looks good. l like 2d art but I'm not very good at it. I just got a new little Intuos graphics tablet as I broke my old one.

How did you break your old one, if I may ask?

SuperDoomKing I dropped the pen, which I've done a hundred times, but it just happened to land on the tip and it broke the plastic around it. It was an old Chinese one anyway and there was a big lag when painting in Krita. This one works so much better.

Going from a couple sketches to an almost finished piece is always a joy for me to see.
This one is almost done, just need to fix the hair a bit and maybe some other tweaks.

I am quite excited about drawing characters, I am not sure yet how or if it will translate to the fishing project.
Or maybe I'll consider putting this project on hold and make one where the character portraits work better.
Either way, I think my coming projects will be exciting regardless.

Side note:
I designed her with a kiwi fruit in mind. Which is why the colours are primarily brown and green.
The eyes are also drawn to vaguely look like the inside of a kiwi. 🥝

I like to name her キヰ, Kiwi written in Japanese katakana.
With the second character ヰ being an old fashioned way of saying 'wi'.
Giving her name a somewhat classy vibe.

Just making a meme out of my old sketch version, compared to the polished near final version.

If I want something people to take from this comparison, is that you should trust in the process and in yourself.
Your first sketch may look trash, but the beauty will show once you start refining. 🖼️

Interesting to note, the dark green used in the tie is the only colour that stayed the same.
All other colours got changed.

Next up, I have ideas of potential next characters I will draw.
A goth, playing with some dark blacks and maybe some contrasting vibrant colours.
A male friend character, wouldn't be fun if every character is just a girl.
A father figure.

My goal is to have around 8 characters, or at least 4 for a demo, maybe more depending on how I want the story to go.

Testing some dithering to see how it looks.
You think I should keep it?
If I do, my future characters will also have heavy dithering.

I like the dithering, but it may slow down your development time. Makes the character more interesting, though.

Yea, I think the dithering will make the game go from looking like a late stage beta to a final product.
But since I still have to do all the code and stuff, it's not as important to do right now.

Character 2.
This guy will be the protag's friend.
I made him taller in pixel height than the previous character,
mainly so he will fit better on screen without his lower torso being cut off.
I will need to update the previous character have a stomach as well, but that is an easy fix.

I added in the background just for fun.
